Prices and Terms
Translating and editing academic texts is highly sophisticated work, requiring not only a perfect command of the languages in question but also a working knowledge in both languages of the subjects involved. In some cases, it might also be necessary to consult standard translations of certain key works of reference, and discuss questions of preferred terminology, adding to the effort and research skills involved. Quite often, knowledge of other languages besides English and German is required, and some projects involve unusual fonts or scripts.
Accordingly, the work involved in a translation or editing project can vary substantially, and this is why I quote for each job on an individual basis. As a rough guide, my translation rates for academic projects start at £90 per 1000 words, and editing rates at £20 per 1000 words. Further surcharges may be applied for urgency and certain file formats. I have a minimum charge of £25.
Before we start working together I always give clients a written estimate of the price of a project, breaking it down into units (price per word, line or hourly rate).
I have worked with many of my clients for years. But if you are a new customer, both you and I will need to establish that we work together well before embarking on a full project. This is why it is my policy to undertake up to 5%* of work done for new clients free of charge and submit it to them for inspection. If you, as a new client, are satisfied with the level of my work, I will then continue with your project and only charge for the remainder of the work.
My terms are based on the General Terms of Business of the Institute of Translation & Interpreting.
Once a client is satisfied a project is completed, I will issue an invoice. Payment is due 30 calendar days after the date of the invoice.
